Not just a black ring
A tyre is built from layers stacked on top of one another. What gets cut on a cheap tyre is usually the quality of these layers — and you cannot see it from the outside.

When to replace
As tread depth drops the tyre can no longer clear water, and braking distance on a wet road grows noticeably. Measuring takes ten seconds; we check it when we arrive.
