How to read a tyre size
That code on the sidewall is the only thing that tells you which tyre fits your car.
205/55 R16 91V, part by part
205 is the width of the tyre in millimetres. 55 is the aspect ratio: the sidewall height as a percentage of the width, so the sidewall is 55 percent of 205. R means radial construction and 16 is the rim diameter in inches. 91 is the load index and V the speed rating.
Why the load and speed ratings matter
Even with the same size, fitting a tyre with a lower load index is unsafe: index 91 means 615 kg per tyre, and that figure is set against the weight of the car. The same goes for speed — V corresponds to 240 km/h. Fitting a lower rating than the vehicle registration states is both dangerous and can create problems with insurance.
Where to find the code
It is moulded into the sidewall. If you cannot find it, the label on the inner edge of the driver's door also has it, together with the manufacturer's recommended size and pressure. If you cannot read it over the phone, photograph the sidewall and send it on WhatsApp — we will read it.
Can you fit a different size
Some cars are approved by the manufacturer for more than one size, and all of them appear in the registration document. Moving to a size that is not listed causes problems at inspection and makes the speedometer read wrong. If you want to change, check the registration first.
