When should you switch to winter tyres?

The obligation starts on 15 November, but the real measure is temperature, not the calendar.

Who the legal obligation covers

In Turkey, winter tyres are compulsory between 15 November and 15 April for buses, lorries, minibuses and commercial vehicles travelling on intercity roads. Private cars are outside this obligation. The fine is set again each year, so we do not quote a figure here — check the current amount with the traffic authority.

Temperature matters more than the date

What makes a winter tyre different is not snow but rubber. A summer compound hardens below 7°C and grips less; a winter compound stays soft at that temperature. So even without snow, if it is consistently below 7°C a winter tyre stops you in a shorter distance on plain wet asphalt. In Edirne that threshold is usually crossed in mid-November.

When all-season tyres make sense

If you drive under 15,000 km a year and mostly in town, all-season tyres are a reasonable middle ground. But if you regularly travel intercity or the vehicle is commercial, two sets are both safer and cheaper over time — each set rests for half the year, so both last longer.

When to book the change

The first week of November. Once the obligation starts everyone moves at once and appointments get tight. We have no queue because we come to you, but being early still saves you from being stranded on a cold morning.
